There are various acne cleansers for adult skin on the market. If you suffer from acne, they are worth a try. You should definitely avoid soap because it is drying and can strip the skin of its natural oils. An acne cleanser should be applied to the face, from the neck to the hairline, twice a day and gently massaged in with a soft cloth, preferably made of microfiber. Other people prefer to use clean hands and no cloth. After applying your cleanser, rinse the face with water. If your skin tends to be very oily, you might need to use an astringent but make sure you apply it only to the very oily parts. You can also get acne shampoo if your head is oily and if you get scalp acne. Try to use this at least twice a week.
It is important to cleanse your face properly because any irritation can lead to further breakouts. Look for the terms non-comedogenic or oil-free on the packaging of any cleansers. Non-comedogenic means that it does not irritate skin prone to acne. After cleansing your face, you need to gently pat your skin dry.
If you wear make up, be sure to cleanse your face well and remove every last trace before going to bed. Make up can irritate acne and oil-free formulations are the best if you must wear it.
A popular cleanser for people prone to acne is Neutrogena Acne Wash which is oil-free. It contains 2% salicylic acid. Another one is Clean and Clear Continuous Control Acne Cleanser. That one contains 10% benzoyl peroxide. If you have been prescribed acne treatment, be careful not to remove it by using these cleansers after application. You should only wash your face twice a day because washing it too much can irritate your acne and benzoyl peroxide can dry out your skin if used in excess.
There are some more holistic ways to cleanse your face including the application of lemon juice to the affected area, waiting 10 minutes and rinsing it off. Topical Vitamin A acid helps to shed skin and stabilizes pore opening. Bacteria find the environment more difficult to live in but do not use this if you might be pregnant. Honey and tea tree oil are other ways to cleanse your face. Apply one of them, wait a few minutes and rinse off. Glycolic acid and azelaic acid can also be beneficial to some acne sufferers. Some people are more sensitive to these than other people so see what works for you.
There are plenty of acne cleansers for adult skin to try but if over the counter remedies do not seem to work for you, you should visit a dermatologist for further advice.
